this hour. president obama continues to warn the nation about upcoming spending cuts that could go into effect march 1st. in his weekly address to the nation he blamed republicans for the crisis. >> these cuts don't have to happen. congress can turn them off any time with just a little compromise. unfortunately, it appears that republicans in congress have decided that instead of compromising, instead of asking anything of the wealthiest americans, they'd rather let these cuts fall squarely on the middle class. >> republican senator john hoven of north dakota delivered the weekly address and said congress has done its part. >> house republicans have already passed two bills to replace the president's sequester. so the question is why won't he work with with us? and the answer, quite simply, is because he wants higher taxes. >> republican governors meeting today in washington are asking the federal government to solve the spending crisis and not to add to the burden on the states. >> don't pass the balancing the federal budget on the backs of state governments because we're still re

, lisa. good morning. >> hey, bill. good morning, everyone. president obama is speaking at the armed forces farewell tribute today in honor of defense secretary lienon panetta. he will be at joint base myer henderson at 4:00 this afternoon. this is the formal goodbye for panetta stepping down from his position. yesterday, he testified over the attacks in benghazi where he revealed there was no advanced warning for those attacks. he said that factor plus the time and distance involved prevented the u.s. military from reaching the consulate before four americans were killed. panetta also confirmed he personally broke the news to president obama the night of the attack but that the two did not speak the rest of the evening as the assault continued to unfold. the president had told panetta to do whatever he needed to do to protect our people out in benghazi. today, house democrats wrap up their annual retreat with a little comedy. stephen colbert is speaking to the caucus thanks to an invite from nancy pelosi. after his comedy routine, pelosi will interview

the debt. we have to pay the bill. the idea that the only way you got president obama and the democrats in congress to cut spending is to threaten them that is not true. that one piece of inside information is president obama really cares about the deficit. if there is something he noticed in the first two years when the economic crisis had to be front and center, the thing he wanted to deal with was the long-run deficit. the idea that he went on a spending binge if you don't make threats like that is crazy. the evidence is there that he put spending cuts on the table. he asked them for them to be paired with tax increases as well. there is more good will than people realize. more agreement that we have such a big budget problem that will we're going to fire on all cylinders. we have to cut spending. frankly, we have raise more revenue. >> you're listening to the california program and our speakers are economic experts. we are discussing national, regional, and global economic challenges. you can find video online. there's a series of questions around employment and job growth. what wha

. look at the front page of "usa today." we'll start there. new polling is showing that president obama has a strong lead over congressional republicans on a host of big issues playing out right now in washington. that's according to the you in noons from "usa today" and pew research center. 45% of those polled say they support the president's approach to cutting the federal deficit. 38% support republicans, even a majority of republican voters endorse tax hikes as well as spending cuts. on gun reform, the president's approach polls six points higher than that of the gop. the poll also finds less than one-third of americans would blame the president if the sequester cuts kick in. nearly half of all americans would blame republicans. and on immigration, half of those polled say the president is taking the right approach. 33% endorse how republicans are tackling the issue. >> so james, if i'm still congressman in northwest florida and somebody hands me this and says, you're in trouble. i'm in trouble. i may get 79% instead of 80% of the vote, but that's what's running the republican brand

are an important part of the approach that the obama administration has followed and congress has supported, and it appears that sanctions are producing tremendous pressure on iran. another statement which has raised concern is senator hagel's recommendation that we conduct, "direct, unconditional, and comprehensive talks with the government of iran." now, while there is value in communicating with our adversaries, the formulation used by senator hagel seemed to imply a willingness to talk to iran on some issues that i believe most of us would view as non-negotiable, and any willingness to talk to iran would need to be highly conditional. senator hagel's reassurance to me and my office that he supports the obama administration's strong stance against iran is significant. we look forward to hearing senator hagel today in some depth on that subject. we will also be interested in hearing senator hagel's statement on the public statements is made on israel and the united states, that our policy of non-engagement with the syrians as, "isolated us more than the syrians," and a 2009 statement that

'm tempted to describe president obama's spending and tax ideas as small ball, but they're worse than that. they represent a conscious decision to neglect some of the most pressing issues that confront our country. you might even say it's a dereliction of duty in the battle to save america. last week, the congressional budget office projected that our gross national debt will increase from $16 trillion in 2012 to $26 trillion in 2023. now, that may seem like a long way off, but just since president obama has been president, the national debt's gone up by 55%, just in the last four years. but if you project that forward to 2023 when some of these young men and women who are working here as pages will be looking at entering the work force and looking at their futures, all they will see ahead of them is debt and a reduced standard of living. this is what lies ahead for all of us unless we embrace real spending cuts and unless we deal with the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security. now, president obama has a secret strategy for getting our debt under control, we'd all love to he
